Yeah... any of you out there still reading this article, note that it's very outdated. All of the gripes about rails not having a big community or not having a good debugger or good libraries are moot. Check out Github.com and all the rails plugins (and even the Rails 2 source code) that reside there. Check out the book "Agile Web Development with Rails". It's the best Rails book out there, IMO.

Rebecca,

I’d suggest picking a couple of your better developers to work though the tutorials, or attend a course (if you can find one). Alternatively, hire in a contractor to get these guys up to speed.

I agree with some of the sentiments in this article – that the tutorials can give you a false sense of achievement: starting cold on your own project have you suddenly realise that you still have a very steep learning curve to climb. However, much of that is really ‘unlearning’ all the bad habits and techniques that are no longer appropriate in a Rails environment.

My experience so far has been that using Rails puts you closer the the business problem you’re trying to solve, without all the web framework crap getting in the way. It makes it a lot easier to say ‘yes’ to new ideas and enhancements too.

Hi guys,

How would you suggest introducing Ruby on Rails to an organization that hasn’t used it before?

Cheers
